Over the course of 6 days, participants will go through a global multidisciplinary over-wiew, we'll define a fresh methodology to optimize an idea; starting from the concept and decision making and continuing with digital and generative design tools to get the best solution for each problem. We'll also look at nature to inspire the evolutionary optimization process in architecture and several tools to help in that task will be introduced.
Concept - "Optimization in Design"
- Abstract: Through a global multidisciplinary overview, we´ll define a fresh methodology to optimize an idea; starting from the concept and decision making and continuing with digital and generative design tools to get the best solution for each problem. We´ll also look at nature to inspire the evolutionary optimization process in architecture and several tools to help in that task will be introduced. - Destined for: No specific knowledge area is needed but recommended for designers, architects, engineers and business managers.
Concept and Objectives
- Abstract: the primary objectives for this workshop is to show a different point of viewing the optimization process is coming; a complex and continuously changing word is affecting our way of solving problems. Nowadays, we can access to a big amount of data affecting our decisions but, how can we handle it? How technology can help us? What if we start thinking, not in solutions but in causes? Is that possible? In that way, we could start predicting that Nature (the only company that has not gone bankrupt in over 4000M years) have several useful answers...Our solutions could "emerge" from the needs: generative solutions. Would you like to join into this challenge? - Destined for: technical students / professionals: engineers (mechanical, structural, civil, marine, energetic), architects, industrial/product designers. Grasshopper level 1 is required!

For designers who are exploring new shapes using generative algorithms, Grasshopper® is a graphical algorithm editor tightly integrated with Rhino's 3-D modeling tools. Unlike RhinoScript, Grasshopper requires no knowledge of programming or scripting, but still allows designers to build form generators from the simple to the awe-inspiring. Rhinoceros (Rhino) is a stand-alone, commercial NURBS-based 3D modeling software, developed by Robert McNeel & Associates. The software is commonly used for industrial design, architecture, marine design, jewelry design, automotive design, CAD / CAM, rapid prototyping, reverse engineering, product design as well as the multimedia and graphic design industries. Rhino specializes in free - form non-uniform rational B - spline (NURBS) modeling. Like many modeling applications, Rhino also features a scripting language, based on the Visual Basic language, and an SDK that allows reading and writing Rhino files directly. Rhinoceros 3d gained its popularity in architectural design in part because of the Grasshopper plug-in for computational design. Many new avant-garde architects are using parametric modeling tools, like Grasshopper.Find more on, www.rhino3d.com.
Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It's intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments. Arduino can sense the environment by receiving input from a variety of sensors and can affect its surroundings by controlling lights, motors, and other actuators. Find more on www.arduino.cc.
